Greene County Medicare Check-Up Event

Open Enrollment for 2012 Medicare D (prescription) and Advantage Plans starts today (October 15th) and runs through December 7th. We encourage all Medicare Beneficiaries to talk with an OSHIIP (Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program) -trained volunteer to review your options for 2012.

The Greene County Medicare Check-Up Event is this Wednesday, October 19th from 11am to 6pm at the OSU Extension office in Xenia (100 Fairgrounds Road, behind the grandstand). You or your loved one can talk one-on-one with one of the counselors to review the options that fit your situation, explain to you the impact of each (premium, co-pays, deductibles, when you might reach the donut hole, etc.), and answer your questions so you can make an informed decision.

The plan you have for 2011 may still be the best option, but it may not. And for some, this will be their first opportunity to consider taking on a Medicare D or Advantage Plan. We have thirty-three (33) Medicare D plans and twenty (20) Advantage plans available to Greene County Medicare Beneficiaries, and very few of us have the time, energy or inclination to go through all of these options to find the best one for our unique situation.

If you or your loved one are not available to come out on the 19th, please contact the Council (376-5486) and we will connect you with one of our team members or a team member from the senior center in your community so you can schedule an appointment.

Pro-Life Day of Silent Solidarity, Student-Led Cause For Justice

According to the Students for Life organization, October 18th is Pro-Life Day of Silent Solidarity. Thousands of students across the country give up their voices for a day of solidarity for those who have had their voices unjustly taken away from them. They will wear red bands across their arms or mouths to make a stand against the horrific truth that over 50,000,000 lives have been taken since Roe v. Wade

Over 1,200 school groups have registered to participate in the Pro-Life Day of Silent Solidarity.

Support for the event include Students for Life, Priests for Life, LifeSiteNews.com, Survivors of the Abortion Holocaust, and other organizations.

Defender of Life at the United Nations Takes The Audi Best Buddies Challenge, Needs Your Support

Austin Ruse, Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute, has accepted a challenge, that is the Audi Best Buddies Challenge in Washington D.C.

Best Buddies is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

Participants at the October 22nd Best Buddies Challenge in D.C. will include politicians, celebrities, non-celebrities, the disabled, and even Austin Ruse.

Not that Ruse is intellectually challenged. Rather, his challenge is to have the largest number of supporters and financial. If he is the number one fundraiser, Ruse says “they give me the microphone, and I will make a pro-life plea. I will tell the huge crowd about the holocaust of abortion committed in general but also how the developmentally disabled are particularly targeted. Most people do not know this and these people really need to hear this message.”

If you support life and helping the disabled achieve the best possible life, I’m sure Austin Ruse would welcome your support. For more information, go to www.dcchallenge2011.org/austinruse.

In case you are not familiar with the work of Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute, go the website www.c-fam.org. You will discover how they labor to defend the rights and culture of life at the United Nations.

Going Places is a Miami Valley Regional Planning land use initiative. The three phase project began in 2007 bringing together community leaders, business leaders, developers, and citizens from every city, town and village. The goal has been to create a consensus vision for land use and development that will benefit all citizens in the future. Phase I was completed in 2009. (To see the report of Phase I, go here.)

Phase II began a little later in 2009. During this phase, surveys and workshops were conducted to obtain input from citizens, business and community leaders throughout the Miami Valley. Their views and ideas were compiled into seven best future land use scenarios believed beneficial to all people of the region. Following the workshops, public open houses were held to present the results. Phase II was completed in May of 2011. (To read the report of the Phase II, go here.)

New York Times Gets It Wrong–Moscow Demograohic Summit Is About Declining Birthrates

A recent new York Times article (“<a href=”http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/10/world/europe/10iht-abortion10.html?scp=1&amp;sq=Russians%20Adopt%20U.S.%20tactics%20In%20Opposing%20Abortion&amp;st=cse” target=”_new”>Russians Adopt U.S. tactics In Opposing Abortion</a>”) mischaracterizes the upcoming <a href=”http://worldcongress.ru” target=”_new”>Moscow Demographic Summit: The Family and The Future of Humankind</a> – June 29-30 a the Russian State Social University – as “an international anti-abortion meeting.”

World Congress of Families Managing Director Larry Jacobs, who was mentioned in The Times’ story twice, set the record straight: “While it’s true that World Congress of Families is uncompromisingly  pro-life, as part of our natural family agenda, the Moscow Demographic Summit is first and foremost about the dramatic worldwide decline of birthrates, and only secondarily about abortion. Our goals are to analyze the phenomenon, examine how we reached this crisis and suggest solutions to what could be the greatest challenge confronting humanity in this century.”

Jacobs continued, “While abortion has played an undeniable role in this tragedy, it’s far from the only factor. Late marriage, cohabitation and the culturally induced desire for small families are among the many factors which have led to a 50% decline in birthrates worldwide since the late 1960s.  While pro-life spokesmen (Russian and international) will play a prominent role in the Summit, so too will demographers, economists, sociologists, authors, researchers and political and religious leaders, whose primary concern lies in other areas.”

In discussing growing Russian opposition to abortion on demand, The New York Times also failed to note the grim reality the nation faces: It’s birthrate is barely 1.2 (children per woman) with a birthrate of 2.1 needed just to replace current population. It’s been estimated that in Russia today there are 4 million abortions annually and only 1.7 million live births. “This is national suicide by ‘choice.’” Jacobs comments.

For more information about the Moscow Demographic Summit, including a partial list of speakers, go to <a href=”http://www.worldcongress.ru” target=”_new”>www.worldcongress.ru</a> or see the May 27 article titled <a href=”http://www.profam.org/press/wcf.pr.110527.htm” target=”_new”>”Moscow Demographic Summit One Month Away</a>”.

The Summit has been endorsed by Patriarch Kirill, head of the Russian Orthodox Church. In a message to delegates, Patriarch Kirill noted that the purpose of the Summit is “to defend traditional family values and to analyze the world’s demographic problems.”
