Why the Stimulus has Failed Ohio

By Mary McCleary

It is a generally accepted fact that the stimulus did not work and the supposed “Summer of Recovery” was anything but that. Since the original stimulus package was passed under President George W. Bush, national unemployment has doubled from 4.8 percent to 9.6 percent while Ohio unemployment has risen from 5.6 percent to 10.1 percent. When Congress passed the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009, President Barack Obama promised unemployment would stay below eight percent, yet unemployment continued to rise.

Both the original stimulus and the ARRA have miserably failed, and the big question is why. Why isn’t all this spending leading to a revitalized economy?

Stimulus spending does nothing to create wealth. It is merely a redistribution of already existing wealth. Sound confusing? Frederic Bastiat, a nineteenth century political economist, illustrates this concept well through his Broken Window Fallacy.

In Bastiat’s example, a child carelessly breaks a store window. The shopkeeper, in turn, must spend money to replace the broken window. Therefore, the shopkeeper stimulates the economy through purchasing a new window, right? Not so fast.

While the window company benefits from the broken window, other people and industries are hurt by the destruction of capital. Due to the broken window, the shopkeeper has less disposable income to spend on other goods and services. He has to purchase a new window instead of spending his money on new business equipment or whatever he chooses. Thus, the shopkeeper is poorer than he previously was, and other industries do not benefit from the shopkeeper’s dollars. No real wealth is created.

How does this tie into all the stimulus spending? Pretend you are the shopkeeper and the government is the child that forces you to spend money. To “stimulate” the economy, the government forces you to give $500 to subsidize a window company. You lose $500 of disposable income, as do the establishments where you would have spent that money. No wealth is created – it is merely redistributed.

When the government stimulates the economy, it doesn’t create wealth. Instead, it merely picks the winners and the losers.

Since March 2000, Ohio has lost 588,600 private sector jobs (second only to Michigan). Of these job losses, 137,000 occurred after ARRA went into effect (Ohio has lost 386,800 jobs since Governor Ted Strickland took over). If “stimulus” spending isn’t helping Ohio reach better days, what will?

* Broad-base tax reform. Ohio has the seventh highest state and local tax burden. High taxes hurt economic growth and give companies an incentive to locate to lower tax states.

* Regulatory reform. Regulations increase the cost of doing business. Just recently, Continental Plastics moved to Indiana to avoid an Ohio regulation costing Toledo over 200 jobs. According to the Toledo Blade, since 2000, about 140 factories have closed in northwest Ohio with a majority relocating to the southern United States. In fact, 20 companies over the last ten years have left Ohio for just Atlanta, Georgia.

* Right-to-work reform. Ohio does not protect a worker’s freedom to choose whether or not to join a union to obtain employment. Over the last 20 years, right-to-work states have added and sustained jobs twice as fast as forced unionization states like Ohio – even after large housing-related job losses in Arizona, Florida, and Nevada. The 15 worst states for job growth since January 1990 are all forced unionization states, while 11 of the 15 top states are right-to-work states.

* Budget reform. Ohio currently faces an estimated $8.4 billion budget deficit. In a state already struggling, raising taxes is not a viable option for recovery. The budget must be realigned to fit the economic conditions of the time. To minimize the effect on our vulnerable populations, the compensation of government workers cannot be taken off the table. If state government worker compensation is realigned to match the private sector, the state could save over $2 billion dollars in the next budget.

As Bastiat and the stimulus have proven, redistributive spending is no way to dig out of an economic hole. While Ohioans have relatively little sway over federal government spending, Ohioans do have an important say in how this state is run. It is time for our leaders to make the tough choices and for the people to hold them accountable when they don’t.

From Weeping to Laughing : Sermon on the Mount

In the two versions of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus taught his disciples about grief and sorrow. In the version recorded in the gospel of Matthew, Jesus said, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted” (5:4). Luke’s gospel interprets Jesus as saying, “Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh” (6:21b). Matthew’s gospel interprets Jesus saying from the internal process of grieving while the gospel of Luke depicts the same as an outward expression.

The question is this: what the heck is Jesus talking about? Is he speaking about grief due to sin? Or is he referring to the loss of a loved through death? Or is he alluding to something else?

The context of both versions seems to point to grief over sin. In both gospels, what Jesus says after the beatitudes contradicts the status quo view of right and wrong. In effect, the practical requirements of righteousness as expressed in the Sermon reveals how most people then and now fail to measure up. It is what Paul meant when he said, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).

Here are a few examples from the gospel of Matthew: Jesus said, “Don’t worry about your life-food, shelter, clothing, transportation, money” (6:25-34). How about “do not have a savings account, an IRA, or 401K, or the like” (6:19-21). Here is another commandment: “Love your enemies; pray not for their destruction but rather pray for God to bless them”. (6:43-47). Here the easy one: “Be perfect as God is perfect” (6:48). How are you measuring up?

Another contextual clue precedes Jesus’ saying about mourning and weeping. Blessed are the poor both in spirit and otherwise refers to the lack of a right relationship with God. What does being poor in spirit mean? It means not being full of the Spirit. If a person is not full of the Spirit of God it usually means that person is full of something else. In writings of the Apostle Paul, the Greek word used for the something else is sarkikos. It is usually translated as carnal, natural, fleshly, or worldly. It actually means ungodly or behavior uncharacteristic of Christ. The essence of sin then is living contrary to God’s way, which the way Jesus teaches in the Sermon..

One of the best examples of a person grieving over sin is found in Luke’s gospel. Jesus presents a parable of two different types of people praying in the Temple. One is a Pharisee and the other a wretched tax collector. The Pharisee tells God about his righteous deeds while the tax collector cries out to God for mercy. Ashamed by the realization of his evil ways, “the tax collector was unwilling to lift up his head toward heaven. Instead, he pounds his chest, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner'” (18:9-14).

Another good example is the woman who repented of her sins by washing Jesus feet with tears and wiping his feet with her hair, which took place in the house of a Pharisee who had invited Jesus to his home for dinner. Entering the house of a Pharisee uninvited was pretty risky. Sinners were not allowed but to allow a immoral woman to touch you even more grievous. But, as Jesus pointed out, his host failed to perform the customary purity ritual of feet washing, but the sinful woman did. She washed his feet with tears of sorrow over her own sins. She demonstrated unusually humility when she wiped his feet with her hair. A woman’s hair represented the glory of her beauty. This unnamed woman did all of it as a silent cry for God’s forgiveness. She was not disappointed. (Luke 7:36-50).

The term mourning usually depicts loss of some sort. The loss of wealth or possession certainly is something about which people mourn. From the viewpoint of political economy, poverty more often than not is the result of sin. Often it is the result of an abuse of power and a result of greed. Communist Russia (USSR) impoverished a majority of its people by its empire building efforts around the world. I have heard of people being impoverished in China and Muslim countries only because of their Christian beliefs. United States government is also impoverishing many citizens by means of its ever-increasing debt spending and, to a lesser extent, its sanctioning of corporate globalism. American empire building is the reason for much of the enormous national debt. Poverty may also be the result of an impoverished mentality. The story of the ancient post-Exodus Jews present one example. Many second and third generation Americans who lived by government welfare is another. Sometimes poverty is the result of illness or similar tragedy. That is why the American founders agreed to the idea of a right “to the pursuit of happiness” rather than a guaranteed right to prosperity.

Because the blessed poor have access to the kingdom of God, their wealth in material things and in spirit is supplied by God. And God delights in the prosperity of His people. (1 Corinthians 8:9; 9:6-11; Ex. 30:5-10)

The vagueness of Jesus’ saying about mourning and weeping most likely was meant to encompass all human grief and sorrow. As the prophet Isaiah foresaw it, Jesus bore all our grief, sorrows, and infirmities (Isaiah 53). Not just for our sins, but for our loss of loved one simply through death, the loss of jobs and wealth, the loss of homes due to some disaster, the loss of health resulting in other losses as well. Therefore, God comforts those whose mourning is directed toward Him. Relatives and friends simply being present while grieving the loss of a spouse, parent, or child is a comfort. Being there proves that not all is lost–not all life is lost. In the kingdom of God, the expectant hope is that one day the grieving will one day be together with their loved one who died. That hope is reinforced when God is manifestedly presence during such a time.

Some biblical examples include a Shunammite’s women’s grief over the death of her son and God raising her son from the dead through the prophet Elisha (2 Kings 4:18-37); Jesus raises the dead son of widow in Nain because he saw her weeping and empathized with her loss (Luke 7:11-15); a woman who had suffered a hemorrhage 12 year and spent all her wealth attempting to get healed was instantly healed of her terrible affliction (Mark 5:25-34); and ten men who suffered the extremely painful and crippling disease leprosy cried out for Jesus to have mercy on them and Jesus healed them (Luke 17:11-19).

When people in the kingdom lose jobs, health, or wealth, God makes them laugh. Those taught by God learn to laugh at adversity. When God heals through whatever process, God gives people a reason to laugh. When couples who were unable have children give birth to their first child because of answered prayer, they laugh. (Genesis 17:17; 18:13; 21:1-8) When God provides resources during times of loss, God gives people a reason to laugh. When loss happens, people who seek God find a reprieve from the anxiety of uncertainty. A joyful heart (internal) is like medicine (Proverbs 17:22). Laughter (external) proceeds out of such a heart (Matthew 15:18). Because Jesus is the Great Physician, those who weep now will laugh. (Luke 4:23; 5:31; 6:2b).

Texas Doctors Sue ObamaCare

On Wednesday, a court in Tyler, Texas, heard a lawsuit against ObamaCare brought by two Texas-based doctor-owned hospitals. The doctors argue in the case that ObamaCare ends competition between doctor-owned hospitals and non-doctor-owned hospitals by stopping the growth of their facilities and banning any new doctor-owned facilities from opening. This means that the healthcare “reform” legislation pushed through Congress effectively favors one type of business over another, and even punishes doctors who have a financial stake in the success of their facilities. Should the doctors be unsuccessful in their lawsuit, ObamaCare will give patients less choice over their healthcare providers and medical facilities, and the lack of competition will drive up healthcare costs and decrease patient care.

This is just one of around 23 lawsuits against ObamaCare, including the lawsuit filed by 20 states to stop the federal mandate to buy healthcare and the increased cost to the states. The judge presiding over the states’ lawsuit said that he will rule by October 14.

“Pledge for America” and Small Business

The House GOP leadership released their “Pledge to America” last week, which included various proposals focused on helping small business owners and entrepreneurs.

Specifically, the pledge would stop tax increases on all taxpayers (when the Bush tax cuts expire at the end of this year) and provide small business owners with another significant tax deduction to free up additional resources for investment and hiring. The Pledge also repeals the new health care law, and replaces it with reforms that have long been sought by the small business community. On the regulatory front, the Pledge makes members of Congress accountable for the laws they pass by requiring congressional approval of new federal regulations. It also proposes to start chipping away at out-of-control spending, which must be done for the U.S. to remain competitive, fiscally strong and the land of opportunity.

“Business owners want to get back to growing, investing and creating jobs. They want to stop worrying about the uncertainty of higher taxes and a health care bill that threatens to overtake their businesses with unsustainable costs and a blizzard of new paperwork,” said Karen Kerrigan.* She congratulated Republicans for putting forth a pro-growth, pro-entrepreneur agenda that will help small business owners do just that. Pro-Lifers Will Fail Unless We Confront the ‘Corruption of Innocence’

By Patrick B. Craine

If the pro-life movement is to gain any headway, pro-life leaders must confront the root of the attack against the culture of life – the corruption of innocence through sex education and contraception, says Mercedes Arzu Wilson, founder and president of Family of the Americas and a pioneer in the natural family planning movement.

“We have been ignoring the root of the problem all these years,” says Wilson. “The diabolical forces don’t care how much we fight abortion, as long as you don’t touch the source that brings women to abort.”

According to Wilson, the source is the “corruption of innocence that eventually leads to the devaluation of human life, which is manifested through abortion and other sinful deeds.”

The “graphic sexuality ‘education’” taught by Planned Parenthood and its collaborators “is actually indoctrination,” she says. “We’re promoting all kinds of perversions to little children. … If parents really saw what is being taught to their children, they would be horrified.”

These programs encourage children to experiment sexually and purport to teach them methods of “safe sex,” she explained. By handing out or encouraging the use of condoms and the pill, she said the schools encourage a mentality that expects sex without procreation. When the contraceptives fail, abortion is used as the final solution.

“As long as pornographic sex information continues being taught in public and even Catholic schools, abortion will continue,” she said.

She noted further that two out of three women who obtain abortions were using contraception when they got pregnant. “Planned Parenthood knows that it’s not going to work, so they’re ready to offer the next service, which is induced abortion,” she said.

Far more abortions occur through contraception than induced abortion, she added, noting that the pill and other contraceptive methods are designed, in part, to kill the newly-conceived embryo by preventing implantation in his or her mother’s womb. “Why is it that so little effort is made to stop the widespread use of artificial methods of birth control that cause more abortions, and have been responsible for the moral decay worldwide?” she asked.

Wilson has been teaching natural family planning since 1968, and her organization, Family of the Americas, has been teaching her Ovulation Method since it was founded in 1977. Her book on the simple method, which is based on observing cervical mucus, has been translated into 23 languages. They are active in over 100 countries, including China, where their method is being promoted by the government.

According to Wilson, pro-life approaches that focus strictly on abortion and ignore sex ed and contraception will fail because they are missing the root of the problem. “If you don’t go back to the source, you’re wasting your time,” she said. “They will be fighting abortion for the rest of their lives.”

Judicial Watch Uncovers FDA Records Detailing 16 New Deaths Tied to Gardasil

Records Document 3,589 Adverse Reactions Related to Gardasil between May 2009 and September 2010, Including 213 Cases Resulting in Permanent Disability

Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, announced today that it has received new documents from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), detailing reports of adverse reactions to the vaccination for human papillomavirus (HPV), Gardasil. The adverse reactions include 16 new deaths (including four suicides) between May 2009 and September 2010. The FDA also produced 789 “serious” reports, with 213 cases resulting in permanent disability and 25 resulting in a diagnosis of Guillain Barre Syndrome.

Adverse report excerpts include:

* A nineteen year old girl with no medical history except occasional cases bronchitis received Gardasil and in 53 days, had “Headache, Nausea, dizziness, chilling, tiredness, shortness of breath, complained of chest plain, severe cramps.” She experienced an Acute Cardiac Arrhythmia. Attempts to resuscitate her resulted in a sternal fracture, but were unsuccessful and the patient died. — V. 356938

* A thirteen year old girl was vaccinated on July 17th, 2009. Ten days later, she developed a fever and was treated. However, “the patient did not recover and was admitted to the hospital on [August 8th]…She developed dyspnoea and went into a coma…she expired [that day] at around 9:00 pm. The cause of death was determined as ‘death due to viral fever.’ … This event occurred after 23 days of receiving first dose of Gardasil. — V. 380081

* Thirteen days after vaccination, a ten year old girl developed “progressive loss of strength in lower and upper extremities almost totally…Nerve conduction studies [showed Guillain Barre Syndrome].” Case was “considered to be immediately life-threatening.” — V. 339375

One mother of a 13-year old girl who died 37 days after receiving the vaccination noted in a report: “I first declined getting her the vaccination but her doctor ensured me that it was safe…” After her daughter complained of a severe headache, no feeling in her foot and a tingling feeling in her leg, a doctor’s appointment was set for October 23, 2009. “My daughter never made it to Oct[ober] 23rd, which is also her birthday,” the mother noted. “She passed on Oct[ober] 17th, I found her cold unresponsive in her room at 7am….”

“To say Gardasil has a suspect safety record is a big understatement. These reports are troubling and show that the FDA and other public health authorities may be asleep at the switch,” said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. “In the meantime, the public relations push for Gardasil by Merck and politicians on Capitol Hill continues. No one should require this vaccine for young children.”

[The above further demonstrates how government works with physicians to make drug companies profitable at the expense of the well-being of America’s children. The safe-sex drug, Gardasil, is itself product to make the secularist values as harmless as possible. The secularist agenda, however, apparently is not very safe or harmless.]

Ohio Townships look to Unconstitutionally Tax Homeowners

On September 9, the 1851 Center asked the Supreme Court of Ohio to review, and stop, Hamilton Township’s implementation of a tax on new homes.

Ohio’s townships cannot levy taxes. This has made them a popular destination for Ohioans who wish to flee the high costs of city living. However, Hamilton Township (in southwest Ohio) has imposed a charge that, if allowed to stand, would change this. The township has simply labeled its $6,000 tax on new homeowners and developers an “impact fee.”

“This case is about whether Ohio townships may tax citizens, simply by labeling those taxes ‘fees,’ even though Ohio law denies townships this privilege,” 1851 Center Executive Director Maurice Thompson wrote in the brief. “Accordingly, this case raises several issues of great importance: (1) where the line is drawn, in Ohio, between what constitutes a ‘tax’ and what constitutes a ‘fee;’ and (2) whether Ohio townships have some form of inherent police powers beyond those specified in the Ohio Revised Code, or instead, are creatures of limited and defined powers.”

Ohio Counties Can’t Avoid Public Meetings Law; Hold Secret Meetings on Million-Dollar Contracts

In an effort against public corruption in Cincinnati, the 1851 Center filed an amicus brief in the First District Court of Appeals to stop secret meetings amongst Hamilton County Commissioners.

To prevent sweetheart deals and ensure open and objective debate, Ohio’s county commissioners must discuss important public business in public meetings. Cincinnati residents were alarmed to discover Hamilton County Commissioners met behind closed doors to discuss a multi-million dollar contract associated with Cincinnati’s government-planned riverfront development.

The commissioners, which include David Pepper, who is running for Ohio Auditor, claimed they were entitled to meet in secret because Mr. Pepper and Commissioner Todd Portune are attorneys, and were giving legal advice to the remaining commissioner at the meeting.

“A fundamental right underlying our government in Ohio is that Ohioans have a right to know and understand the actions taken by elected officials. This principle is reflected in the Ohio Constitution and Revised Code,” according to the 1851 Center’s brief.

The case awaits oral arguments and the court’s decision.

Early Voting, Politics Without Debate?

By Daniel Downs

Am I the only voter in the world receiving umpteen million calls about early voting? I have never had both parties telling me how crucial it is to my precious liberty to send in a early registration card as soon as it is received. Until this year, I have had no calls about it.

Is it really about freedom to vote? I don’t think so!

Just think, if voting occurs now, much candidate literature, televised or town hall debates will have been missed. Granted, most brochures and debates consist of little deep substance any way. And, apart from stated party agendas, know one ever knows what politicians will do. Nonetheless, multiple debates and literature at least give a voter something to consider before voting.

An informed, not a duped, citizenry stimulates functional democracy in our federal republic of liberty .

I don’t know; maybe I already missed most of the debates. I do know if I voted now, I would miss debates between Rob Portman and Lee Fischer (Oct. 4 & 12 PM) as well as Gov. Strickland and John Kaisch (Oct. 7). I imagine other meet the candidates nights and townhall debates are in the works as well.

This being the case, I have to conclude that the great drive for early voting is not to ensure that everyone will practice their voting right. Rather, the purpose is to get as many voters to support all the party ticket. Early voting thus seems to be politics without meaningful debate.

P.S. Who would be stupid enough to send the registration card in anyway. People willing to making their driver’s license number or security number available to any rip off artist? Or, maybe just die-hard party numbskulls?

Senator Brown Calls on Navistar CEO to Keep Jobs in Springfield

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) sent a letter this week to Dan Ustian, CEO of Navistar International Corporation, urging him to maintain operations at the company’s plant in Springfield. In early August, nearly 400 workers received notice that layoffs may begin as early as October 4.

“The workers in Springfield are second to none in work ethic, dedication, and productivity,” Brown wrote to Ustian. “As Navistar continues with its military and commercial sales and further progresses with the development of cutting edge technology, I urge you to consider the Ohio workforce that has played a critical role in the company’s success.”

Navistar International Corp. produces commercial trucks and diesel engines. The company recently made a commitment to expand operations in Illinois. Brown urged Navistar to make a similar commitment to the Springfield community. In his letter, Brown urged Navistar to continue working with local, state, and federal officials to keep employees working.

Christians Preach to Muslims & Get Arrested

By David J. Rusin

Does the First Amendment protect Christians who bring their message to Muslims at public events or in front of mosques? This is a good question, given the trend of missionaries being placed under arrest while proselytizing to followers of Islam — right here in the United States:

• On June 18, four Christians were arrested for breach of peace at the Arab International Festival in Dearborn, Michigan. The group’s videos show them engaging in reasoned debate with Muslims or merely roaming around, but one festival volunteer accused them of harassment, making him feel “nervous.” According to the Detroit Free Press, “Police said the missionaries were arrested because they failed to obey police commands. Officers maintain the group’s actions were a public safety issue because they caused a large number of people to gather in a small place.” The trial is now in progress.

• On July 3, two evangelicals in front of Philadelphia’s Masjid al-Jamia were arrested by University of Pennsylvania police officers for disorderly conduct and obstruction of a highway. Michael Marcavage says that a bicycle cop demanded that they cease preaching there. When backup arrived, Marcavage started to film. The Daily Pennsylvanian recounts: “He claimed that Officer Nicole Michel assaulted him and forcibly shut off his camera. Marcavage called 911 because ‘the officer was out of control,’ and began filming once more, at which point the police confiscated the device.” He insists that they intentionally destroyed his footage. The trial is scheduled for November.

• On August 30, Mark Holick was outside the Islamic Society of Wichita, Kansas, distributing “packets that included the Gospel of John and the Book of Romans in English and Arabic, [and] a DVD with testimonies of former Islamists who have come to the Lord,” when police allegedly ordered him and a dozen others to move away from the building. He was then arrested for “loitering and failing to disperse.” Holick wants the charges dropped.

At the core of all three cases is the principle that government or entities acting on its behalf cannot muzzle unpopular speech. Newt Gingrich sounds a more specific alarm: freedom is being sacrificed to Shari’a law’s “intolerance against the preaching of religions other than Islam.”

No American city epitomizes this concern as much as heavily Muslim Dearborn. Members of the same Christian group, Acts 17 Apologetics, were tossed from last year’s Arab fest by abusive security personnel. Dearborn authorities attempted to curb the rights of a separate Christian organization to disseminate material at the 2009 event, restrictions later overturned by a federal appeals court. To add insult to injury, Mayor John B. O’Reilly Jr. recently declared that his city is “under attack” by Acts 17.
