X*ACT Thrift Store Closing to Make Way for Arts Center

As 2012 winds down, the Xenia Area Community Theater is making a big move toward fulfilling their long term Arts Mission. For the past few years they have been relying on income from their Second Act Thrift Store to help cover their operating expenses. As they continue to grow, the thrift store revenue has been replaced by growing audiences, memberships and sponsorships. Accordingly, they are transitioning away from the thrift store in favor of what the Transition Team is calling the Xenia Arts Center.

According to X*ACT President Alan King, “The vision we have of the Xenia Arts Center is a creative arts cooperative where local artists, artisans, and fine crafters can display and sell their works.” X*ACT envisions art classes and art related activities as well. Starting immediately, they are actively recruiting local artists to help plan and execute this change. They plan to begin renovations at the New Year and to open the new Arts Center in early 2013.

So now they are faced with clearing out their huge inventory of quality donated items to make way for the artists.

Today they are announcing a big 50% OFF CLEARANCE SALE at the Second Act Thrift Store. They have a large selection of Holiday Decorations, Gifts and Stocking Stuffers, Children’s and Adult’s Clothing, Vintage Furniture, Books, and Household Items.

Everything must go. The 50% OFF CLEARANCE SALE will continue through November or until all of their inventory is gone. Stop in soon to get the best selection of gently used and vintage items. Your purchases will help to fund the building improvements necessary to open the Xenia Arts Center this spring. No reasonable offers will be refused. If you have good second hand items to donate to X*ACT for this sale, please drop them off before Friday, Nov. 16.

Former President Cheryl Dern says, “We’re excited about the future and you can be part of it.” Xenia Area Community Theater and the Second Act Thrift Store are located in hospitable downtown Xenia at 45 E. Second St. Special Clearance Sale hours are Mon – Thurs from 9 AM to 3 PM, Fri from 12 to 6 PM and Saturdays from 10 AM to 2 PM. New book series written by teens for teens

In January 2007, the founders of The Benchmark Group, who had been in the publishing business for a combination of more than 50 years, decided to form a company to launch a line of books written by teens for teens: The Young Writers Series.

The rationale behind the Youth Writers Series is simple: Give creative youth an outlet, a market, to speak to their world. Yes, Benchmark Group makes some money, writers make some money, and readers get affordable books that appeal to them.

Moreover, fresh young voices speak clearly to their generation. Their topics range from fantasy to free verse to the fight for freedom. Their writings are clever, historically accurate and, often, just plain fun.

Some recent titles by teens include “White Star” by Rebecca Wilson. This book of accurate historical fiction explores life in both 1912 and today. Creating two young characters who share their lives across time and space of both worlds. Another book by 14 year old Hannah Reeves is titled “By the Grace of God.” Grace is life during the Civil War. Reeves explores how families do and ought to respond to war.
Not all book are historical fiction. “Centaur’s Door” and “The Line” are fantasy fiction. One explores overcoming persecution and abuse in the fantasy world of centaurs and the other explores battling the darkness of evil through the power of good.

If you are a young writer looking for a way to share your ideas, check out Benchmark Group website at http://www.benchmarkgrouppublishers.com.

According to their website, the company name was chosen because a benchmark is a standard of excellence. The Benchmark Group desires to give excellent service and to be obedient to God in all our service, publications, and dealings with authors, clients and customers. Because the Biblical standard is the ultimate benchmark, it is the standard to which they hold themselves to. Therefore, Benchmark Group books are meticulously edited for clarity and accuracy and never contain offensive material or language.

First Friday, Make Music…Do Art…Have Fun

BuskersNeededFirst Friday is tomorrow in downtown Xenia. An awning will be set up outside and the PA set up after 5 pm. If you want to play or sing or draw on the sidewalk or even the side of our building on Friday from 5-9 PM, come on down. Paint yourself white and stand still… Who cares? Even if you can’t do a frikkin’ thing artistic, come on down to support The Cavern and Express Yourself. Let’s not let the old stuffy folks downtown decide what’s good to do outside on a warm summer evening!!! Bring your friends.

Mural Art One Step Closer to Reality

The four finalists have turned in their finished artwork and now it is up to the judges to decide which design is going to be the first one to grace a building in Xenia next year. The problem now is going to be deciding which three are going to need to find other homes. The judges are asking the citizens of Xenia to take a look at the four colorful and inspired designs that they must choose from and give them some comments. The artwork will be on display at this Saturday’s Xenia Rail and Arts Fest at the Inner I Gallery, 81 E. Main Street where they will share the spotlight with the Fest’s extensive model railroad setups. “I would love to see any of these great designs go up,” says Mural Society member Mary Crockett. Fourteen entries were received by the Society in July. The four finalists are Xenia muralist and teacher Paul Lavigne, local muralist and art instructor Olivia Anderson, Xenia Community Schools art teacher Rob Richards, and local gallery owner Karen King.

“I know I would love to have any one of these pictures on the side of my building,” says member Alan King, owner of the Express Yourself Coffeehouse and Art Gallery and one of the potential hosts for a future mural. “The Montgomery Insurance and Investments building was the Society’s logical first choice for a mural site,” says King. “It has great exposure and Brad and Eric Montgomery are willing to do what they can to help make this happen.” The winner of the $500 first prize for mural design will be announced at Xenia’s Old Fashioned Days on Sept. 19. Plans are underway to solicit bids from potential muralists to complete the work and private and corporate sponsors are being sought to help the building owners complete the project. Murals on this scale can cost from $5000 to $15,000 to complete, depending on the building condition and the muralist’s fees. The mural Society will retain ownership of the mural and the design and the owner will have to agree to maintain the work for at least 10 years. “We want to have about 10 of these murals up in Xenia some day,” says King. “We know that raising funds for this will be hard, but we think that the people of Xenia will get behind this project and make it happen.” The Xenia Mural Society is a component of Greene Giving, the Greene County Community foundation and has received assistance from the Ohio Arts Council in organizing. Artwork of Melissa Faulkner-Vanzant at Express Yourself

Imagine drips, dramatic color combinations, and girlish icons scattered across a field of pastel stripes. A broad range of techniques grace the score of canvasses at a new exhibit by Melissa Faulkner-Vanzant at Express Yourself Coffeehouse & Art Gallery. Melissa was born and raised in Xenia and graduated from Wright State University’s School of Fine Arts. Sculpture was her preferred mode of expression during her college years, but she has found that painting allows her to better “express my love of color and interest in geometric shapes.” Over the last few years her works have been displayed in galleries and shows in Dayton and Yellow Springs to positive reviews.

M_VanzantArtThe public is invited to view the artwork and meet Melissa Faulkner-Vanzant in person at a “Meet the Artist” reception to be held at Express Yourself on Saturday, July 25. Light hors d’oeuvres will be served from 2-4 PM. All of the works are for sale and many are very reasonably priced. Her paintings will be on display through August 1 during regular lunch hours Monday through Saturday at Express Yourself Coffeehouse and Art Gallery, located a block from the courthouse at 78 E. Main St. in downtown Xenia. For hours and information visit ExpressYourselfCoffeehouse.com, phone (937) 372-7446 or by email at xeniacoffee@sbcglobal.net.

Become a Xenia Busker … First Fridays

Xenia will be having something called “First Fridays” on (believe it or not!) the first Friday of each month throughout the summer. We want to have live performances on the streets from 5 to 8+ PM starting on July 3 and YOU are invited to participate.

No pay. Probably not too many people at first. It might be hot.

But if you want to do your thing
     Play your guitar
     Or conga drum
     Or bucket
     mandolin, harmonica, banjo
     If you play a bagpipe
     Juggle
     Swallow a sword
     Breath fire
If you want to paint yourself silver and play statue
If you want to twirl your baton
     Show off your dance routine
If you always wanted to be a mime
If you want to sing out, sing out
     Whatever

We’re going to give you the chance. Buskers are welcome in Xenia on First Friday. All over town, but especially downtown. At the theater or The Cavern or somewhere else.

And I told the person in charge of arranging the whole thing that I knew some people.

So help me out
Don’t make me a liar
Think of it as a talent show for the whole town.

And we’re having an open stage/open mic starting at 8:30 at The Cavern along with a new exhibit of local art.

So hit me up with a message if you might be interested and I’ll sign you up!

Thanks
Peace
Alan

Call to Artists

The Xenia Mural Society, a component of Greene Giving, is issuing a Call to Artists for original and creative designs for a mural with the general theme of “Trails” to be placed on a building in Xenia. For this mural, “Trails” can be interpreted loosely to include anything historical or currently relative to the Xenia area from buffalo trails to Native American trails, Pioneer trails, early roadways, railroads, hiking, or bicycling or any combination of these.

The Xenia Mural Society will be facilitating the creation of a number of pieces of public mural art in Xenia. The Society is made up of interested citizens who have volunteered their time and expertise to provide direction and focus for the mural project; to help building owners locate funding for the mural art from the private and public sectors; and to promote expansion and preservation of other Xenia murals in the future.

The honorarium for the winning artist’s design for the “Trails” mural will be $500 and the design will become the property of the Xenia Mural Society. The final mural will be completed by a muralist working in conjunction with the winning artist and the Society. If the selected artist has the ability and desire to complete the actual mural he or she will be encouraged to submit a proposal for the entire project. Given current economic conditions, the Society is working to have a “brush ready” project prepared in order to facilitate creation of a mural or murals as soon as funding permits.

The deadline for submission of up to three detailed sketches per artist is July 1, 2009. Several possible sites may be viewed online at www.XeniaMurals.org. There are currently two buildings whose owners have agreed to discuss hosting a mural: Building 1, Montgomery Insurance and Investments is located at 114 S. Detroit St. and has a side wall space of approximately 75X25′ and building 2, Express Yourself Coffeehouse and Art Gallery is located at 78 E. Main St., and has a side wall space of approximately 75X14′. All or part of the wall surfaces may be incorporated into the rendering. An Application Form should be submitted with each set of sketches. A printable form is available at www.XeniaMurals.org.

Finalists will be selected by the Selection Committee of the Xenia Mural Society and will be asked to submit a full color rendering on canvas or other suitable material, no smaller than 24″ in width, which must be received by August 15, 2009. Final competing designs will be displayed for public comment at Xenia’s Rail & Arts Fest on August 22. The winning submission will be announced at Xenia’s Old Fashioned Days, September 19, 2009.

For more information visit www.XeniaMurals.org or email info@xeniamurals.org or phone the Xenia Area Chamber of Commerce (937) 372-3591.

Yellow Springs Artist Roger Smith at Express Yourself Gallery

Here is an aging hippie who has done his share of time in the Glen and the Pine Forest. It is evident that he has spent untold hours taking in the changing character of the seasons and the land when you look into the depths of Yellow Springs native Roger Smith’s semi-Expressionist paintings of his hometown’s famous woodlands.

The paintings in this exhibit are primarily oils that lean towards forest landscapes and outdoor scenes. Smith calls them, “etheric landscapes of a spiritual nature.” Also included in the show are a few abstract and Eastern religious works which add an unexpected dimension to the collection. Unique to this artist is the range of sizes he works with. “The paintings range in size from minitures of 5×7 inches to as large as 36×40 inches,” he says. As a working artist who frequents nearly all of the art fairs in the region, Smith has specialized in affordable miniatures which are more accessible to the average casual art buyer. The prices range from $35.00 for the miniature canvases to several hundred dollars for the larger works.

Smith’ paintings are on display through the end of March at Express Yourself Coffeehouse and Art Gallery, 78 E. Main St. in downtown Xenia. Exhibit hours are 7 AM to 2 PM, Monday through Saturday and 6 to 9 PM on Friday and Saturday evenings. Stop in and enjoy a latte and an inexpensive lunch while you enjoy the art. For more information call (937) 372-7446, email xeniacoffee@sbcglobal.net or visit www.ExpressYourselfCoffeehouse.com.
